Brighton genre-bending trio CIEL release brand new EP ‘Not In The Sun, Nor In The Dark’, out today (October 7th) via cult indie label Jazz Life (Blood Red Shoes, Tigercub, Circe).
Fresh from an A-List spot on BBC 6 Music (alongside Hot Chip, The National & Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and including recent singles ‘Baby Don’t You Know’ and 'Back To The Feeling', the group are currently on their first ever UK headline tour, following on from an acclaimed festival season which has seen them perform on the BBC 6 Music stage at The Great Escape (with Opus Kink & Deadletter) and the Far Out Stage at Green Man Festival (with Cate Le Bon, Dry Cleaning & Parquet Courts).
Detailing their EP release, enigmatic frontwoman Michelle Hindriks explained: ““The making of 'Not In The Sun, Nor In The Dark' didn’t happen without struggles. Only a couple of days before the recording process our guitarist Jorge fell off his bike and broke his wrist. He recorded all the guitar parts for the EP with his wrist in a cast. I was really worried when I saw him going for it on the guitar during the recording process. Our bassist also quit just a few weeks before the recordings, so I switched from guitar to playing bass for the first time and we transformed into a three piece - which I found much more fun than I had originally thought. I think with this EP we finally found our true sound and went back to the core of what all the songs are about, really keeping true to their essence".
With crucial press support throughout the EP campaign from leading publications including Clash, DIY, Dork, CRACK Magazine, Gigwise, The Independent and Under The Radar, the group’s vivid combination of fuzzy indie rock, goth and shoegaze has propelled them to new heights, with further festival dates on the way this autumn.
Produced and mixed by Steven Ansell and mastered by Robin Schmidt (The 1975, Wolf Alice, The Black Keys), CIEL’s ‘Not In The Sun, Nor In The Dark’ (EP) is out now via Jazz Life and available on all digital platforms.
CIEL’s live set-up is Michelle Hindriks (vocals, bass), Jorge Bela Jimenez (guitar), Tim Spencer (drums)
