Brighton genre-bending trio CIEL share aggressive new effort ‘Back To The Feeling’ out today (September 21st), the final reveal from the band’s ‘Not In The Sun, Nor In The Dark’ EP arriving October 7th via cult indie label Jazz Life (Blood Red Shoes, Tigercub, Circe).
Fresh from an A-List spot on BBC 6 Music (alongside Hot Chip, The National & Yeah Yeah Yeahs) with previous single ‘Baby Don’t You Know’, the group have since announced their first ever UK headline tour for October, following on from an acclaimed festival season which has seen them perform on the BBC 6 Music stage at The Great Escape (with Opus Kink & Deadletter) and the Far Out Stage at Green Man Festival (with Cate Le Bon, Dry Cleaning & Parquet Courts).
Speaking ahead of their single release, enigmatic frontwoman Michelle Hindriks detailed: “‘Back To The Feeling’ started off as quite a spiritual song and was eventually brought back to feeling completely absorbed in the moment, carelessness, staying up late and being young, which is quite down to earth but yet feels like a wholesome, kind of spiritual and hedonistic thing to me now. Whereas this was a thing that would happen to you automatically when you’re younger, nowadays I feel like it can be more of a challenge and I need to work hard to reach a state of mind like that, completely away from my phone and any other distractions. When I wrote the song I felt overwhelmed with an in-the-moment kind of feeling, experiencing deep love for the things and people around me - it gave a brief insight to another way of experiencing life”.
With crucial press support throughout the EP campaign already from leading publications including Clash, Dork, CRACK Magazine, Gigwise, The Independent and Under The Radar, the group’s vivid combination of fuzzy indie rock, goth and shoegaze has propelled them to new heights, with further festival dates on the way this autumn, coinciding with the release of their brand new record.
Produced and mixed by Steven Ansell and mastered by Robin Schmidt (The 1975, Wolf Alice, The Black Keys), CIEL’s ‘Back To The Feeling’ is out now via Jazz Life and available on all digital platforms.
CIEL’s live set-up is Michelle Hindriks (vocals, bass), Jorge Bela Jimenez (guitar), Tim Spencer (drums)
