Utrecht quartet Banji reveal the music video for new single ‘Chills’, directed by Pasqual Amade - out now via [PIAS] Recordings.
Filled with pastel coloured, soft-toned shots, and surreal imagery, with an editing style akin to Wes Anderson, the video matches the breezy, light-hearted nature of the song, and further crafts the Dutch four-pieces artistic world.
A catchy, soulful expression of relatable angst, ‘Chills’ adds another building block to the exhilarating foundations the four-piece have been laying down. Harmonised group vocals usher in a bouncy groove - enhanced by staccato keys and playful sax.
Each track released has been an addictive listen, a string of singles that sets the band apart in their search for indie euphoria - from the hyperactive ‘Listen’, laid-back ‘Dogbreath’ and open-hearted ‘TalkieWalkie’.
Lead vocalist Morris Brandt explains the frustrations and ultimate acceptance in the lyrical themes behind the breezy instrumentation:
“Chills is about being in a rut. That feeling of how everything around you goes too fast to keep up with. It's something everybody struggles with now and then, looking for grip. But when you can't find that, you tend to give up and it feels like you're stuck. Sometimes I get really tied up with myself, and it feels like my brain can't really process what I'm trying to deal with. Being okay with that, acknowledging it, and taking a step back has helped me a lot.”
The four-piece have already started turning heads with their brand of indie-pop, harnessing the power of technicolour fun against a greyscale world. An after show set for Vampire Weekend and support slot with Belgian icons Balthazar are wins on the stage, and in the media trusted tastemakers in Billboard, DIY, Clash and more lending are their voices of support.
As well as musicians, each member of the band is a budding producer - and having cut their teeth working with Jeroen De Pessemier at ICP Studios in Brussels, where The Cure and The Vaccines have recorded, they’ve fully taken the reins on self-production duties this time around. This lends a personal flourish, and distinct Banji flavour to every aspect of the track. ‘Chills’ was mixed by Mucky, who has worked with Sevdaliza, Wiley and The Black Eyed Peas.
A creative relationship with LA based artist Zack Rosebrugh has created a defined graphical style to populate the colourful world they’re generating too, with all aspects pulling together to form a welcoming invitation.
