Utrecht quartet Banji reveal new single ‘Chatterbox’ today via [PIAS] Recordings.
‘Chatterbox’ is the grittiest and snappiest release from the four-piece to date. Over two minutes and change vocalist Morris Brandt spits and snarls over front-foot indie-rock augmented with a digital crunch, taking aim at self-centred narcissists.
As he elaborates:
“Chatterbox felt like a departure from the rest of the material we were working on at the time. The energy was definitely different, but also felt familiar in a way. The song is about certain people who are kind of offensively self-assertive and conceited. There are snippets of conversation happening in the song that are more or less inspired by real ones I’ve had. Chatterbox is special to me because it took me a long time to realize that it’s best to acknowledge these types of patterns when they’re happening."
The four-piece have already started turning heads with their brand of indie-pop, harnessing the power of technicolour fun against a greyscale world. An after show set for Vampire Weekend, support slot with Belgian icons Balthazar and successful Dutch and UK tours are wins on the stage, and in the media trusted tastemakers in Billboard, DIY, Clash, DORK and more are lending their voices of support.
Each track released by the Dutch risers has been an addictive listen, a string of singles that sets the band apart in their search for indie euphoria - from the hyperactive ‘Listen’, laid-back ‘Dogbreath’ & ‘Chills’, or open-hearted ‘TalkieWalkie’.
As well as musicians, each member of the band is a budding producer - and having cut their teeth working with Jeroen De Pessemier at ICP Studios in Brussels, where The Cure and The Vaccines have recorded, they’ve fully taken the reins on self-production duties this time around. This lends a personal flourish, and distinct Banji flavour to every aspect of the track. ‘Chills’ was mixed by Mucky, who has worked with Sevdaliza and The Black Eyed Peas.
A creative relationship with Meneer Heirman creates a defined graphical style to populate the colourful world they’re generating, with all aspects pulling together to form a welcoming invitation.
