Utrecht quartet TESSEL release debut EP ‘Family Time’ via [PIAS] Recordings today, launching with a show at trendy underground Amsterdam venue SEXYLAND. EP closer ‘Telephone’ is the focus track on release, and acts as a quintessential example of the band’s compelling sound.
Woozy guitars paint a hazy picture across 6 tracks of lackadaisical, beachy indie. Reminiscent of Real Estate, Beach Fossils or Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever in it’s sunny yet melancholic approach; there’s also a touch of Phoenix’s Euro-cool in its carefree delivery. It’s perfect listening for summer evenings, or the transition into cooler Autumn air.
Over the top of the breezy sound, vocalist Levi Oostermeijer delivers semi-personal stories, touching on themes of growing-up, heartbreak, and disillusionment with desires to attain the ‘perfect’ life. Focus track ‘Telephone’ falls in line with this, as the band explain:
“Telephone displays a story of a boy in his mid twenties, trying to find out how to deal with transience (vergankelijkheid). As in a dream, he describes how it feels to go out for a walk on the beach at night, how it feels to hear the sound of crashing waves in the distance, to feel the cold air touching his skin, and to know that life has just started, to know that it’s never too late to make a change. “Moving in the dark as we watch it fade, stuck in the middle of the night on the beach.”
So far, EP singles have earned acclaim from DIY Magazine, Clash and EARMILK and more at press. They have also built an engaged live following with acclaimed support slots with Ten Fé and Waltzburg, as well as an appearance at Rotterdam’s cross-art festival Motel Mozaïque. Netherlands’ 3voor12 Radio have been big supporters also.
TESSEL are Levi Oostermeijer (lead vocals and guitar), Joshua Bredow (Guitar), Jens Wierckx (Drums and backing vocals) and Thijs van Zutphen (Bass and backing vocals).
