The Melbourne Supremacy! Aussie punkers Amyl And The Sniffers swear in for superstardom on mighty third album…
'You’re a dumb c**t / You’re an arsehole / Every time you talk you mumble, grumble / Need to wipe your mouth after you speak cos it’s an arsehole, bumhole / Dumb c**t.'
‘Bigger, brighter, smarter, sharper‘ album number three after Comfort For Me and Amyl & the Sniffers are having a crack at breaking into the international mainstream. Despite being recorded with producer Nick Launay at Foo Fighters’ 606 Studios in Los Angeles, on the same desk that captured Nirvana’s Nevermind and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, they are still the most unpretentious yet ambitious rock’n’roll outsiders and underdogs keeping the spirit of punk rock/rock’n’roll alive. Amy may be the focus but the Sniffers are the most vital band on the planet, says Ged Babey.
“You are ugly all day, I am hot always / You are just a critic and you want to hit it / You are fucking spiders, I am drinking riders” – Amyl and the Sniffers, “Jerkin'”
Amy Taylor comes out swinging on Amyl and The Sniffers’ third album and her opponents are many, though they all have one thing in common — they’re all trying to bring her down. In the case of “Jerkin‘,” it’s Twitter trolls and reply guys who Taylor quickly puts in their place: “Keep jerkin’ on your squirter / You will never get with me!” (It’s not necessarily just about dudes; Taylor happily notes that almost everyone has a “squirter.”) On Cartoon Darkness, she’s also fighting Big Tech, AI, music industry executives, and all manner of icky men who she attacks with caustic wit, fiery delivery and a crack band who are still delivering the pile-drivers and barn-burners Amyl are known for, while switching things up a little, too.
Aussie punks still spit, but add a bit more polish
With their swearing and flashing, Amy Taylor and co’s return might seem like business as usual – but new melodic depths and lyrical concerns reveal themselves
