Introducing ‘tall child’, the alias for Zha Gandhi - a South East London-based vocalist, synth wiz and songwriter releasing their debut single ‘Damaged’.
‘Damaged’ is an introspective exploration of a turbulent parent-child relationship. Told from the child’s perspective as they learn to be grateful for who they are, and for all the toxic traits they’ve avoided inheriting from their absent parent.
The song opens with Zha’s mesmerising vocals floating over shimmering guitar loops, soon progressing to a solid drum beat paired with achingly beautiful harmonies. The track fills the listener with intention and nostalgia as distorted guitars lead a chorus of Zha’s hopeful lyricism, bringing a poignant contrast as they count their blessings. Soon this builds to an epic and profound outro that shines a spotlight on Zha’s dynamic vocals, as subtle layers of hysterical belting come artfully through the mix.
Speaking on the track, Zha noted:
‘For me, this project is about pushing the boundaries of songwriting through the analysis of personal trauma and reflection. I wanted to create a space that merges all my musical influences into one to form a truly unique sound. I’m hoping that someone with a troubled relationship with a family member can relate to this song and that it reminds them of their autonomy. I feel especially lucky that I was able to record this song with my dear friend Alice Western at Strongroom Studios and my incredibly talented bandmates earlier this year. This is only the beginning for tall child.’
tall child is the moniker of Zha Gandhi, a musician of Nigerian/Indian heritage based in London paving the way for black artists in the indie music scene. Zha takes inspiration from the likes of Mitski, Julia Jacklin, Solange and Alicia Keys, to create a beautifully intimate and authentic basis for their soundscape. Through brutally honest lyrics, Zha explores their experiences as a queer disabled POC in hopes of creating a space for those who empathise with having their differences being used against them.
Born into a family of professional musicians, Zha’s love of singing and songwriting started at a young age. After being accepted into The BRIT School, Zha began their journey as a dedicated musician. They went on to study Popular Music at Goldsmiths University of London, where they met their current bandmates while playing for other bands as a synth player and backing vocalist. These include projects like Buggs and TV Room.
For over a year, tall child had been gigging in London under the name ‘ZHA’, but after solidifying their new identity as a band, they are now ready for the whole world to hear them!
They have already created a name for themselves in London, having played headline shows at venues like The George Tavern, supporting artists like Bel Cobain at Matchstick Piehouse and even appearing as the front page feature of SelOut magazine - the renowned South East London monthly music newsletter.
Outside of tall child, Zha has performed as a synth player and backing vocalist at a number of reputable events and venues - including Green Man Festival with Buggs, The Eden Project with Alice Boyd and touring multiple UK venues with the band: TV Room.
The next chapter for tall child will be delving into the indie music scene, taking up space as a queer black artist and making themselves heard. Zha’s drive to carve out their own style is evident now more than ever. A single release listening party show followed by an upcoming EP is soon to be announced!
