Today, Uma shares new single “Granada”, a song that mirrors her own love story with her mothers. “Granada is the sound of the Underworld, a moody ode to the places we go in love”, explains Uma.
The accompanying artwork is of her mother, Denys, in her 20s photographed by a friend around the time her parents met.
“In a way”, Uma says, “Granada is as much about their love story as my own, a moment in time where you have nothing left to do but surrender to the journey you are on.”
Uma has previously stated that “although at a first glance my songs are very obviously about love and heartbreak that is just my way of processing the world around me. I write from and for the people I love and the issues I care about.”
Denys was born in London, studied art at Farnham and moved to Spain in 1987. She is a performance artist and has been organizing festivals since Uma was little. Uma’s father Tew was born in Bangkok to a diplomatic family. He studied economics at Cambridge. Uma grew up with her mother in Spain while her father lived in Bangkok working for a non profit hospice and orphanage in the slums taking care of people with HIV as well as teaching his tai chi courses. Because of her parents' work Uma grew up traveling and spending long periods of time in different countries such as Thailand, Greenland and Canada.
“Granada” follows recent single “Crocodile” and two previous EP’s, 2020’s debut EP Bel-li and 2021’s The Moth & The Dove which caught the attention of Clash, Loud & Quiet, The Needle Drop, DIY, The Line of Best Fit and Gigwise. Uma’s early work cites touchstone cult folk artists Linda Perhacs, Josephine Foster and Sybille Baier and a combination of classical arrangements, Spanish guitar. More recently, Uma released two songs, “Maybe We'll Wake Up” and a new version of her track “Nebula”, in 2021 with London artist Amy May Ellis. She toured with Puma Blue at the start of 2022.
“Granada” is available on all online platforms on London hybrid label and Management company Slow Dance (PVA , Saint Jude, Glows, Aga Ujma, Tina).
