Birthed in Cardiff (UK), with a name inspired by drummer Hadi Checri’s Lebanese heritage, The Cheeky Habibis are Hadi Checri (Drums and Percussion), Les Davies (Bass) and Gabriel Lester (Guitar and Vocals). The band is, at its core, the amalgamation of three best friends. They are very interested in falafels but when it comes down to it they are even more interested in making good music. Specifically, music they like including, but not limited to, post-disco, new wave and art-rock.
The Cheeky Habibis second single 'Being Human' , named after the 2000s BBC TV show, was recorded two years ago and was almost scrapped until the band met violinist William Dadswell. They decided that the addition of his violin would give the track ‘what it needed’ to sound like a finished song. Lyricist and singer Gabriel Lester describes the song as being about 'a false hope of getting away from the person that you always will be.’ It has sonic similarities to Lewsberg , Echo & the Bunnymen and The Last Whole Earth Catalog .
“Being Human possesses a sense of authority to it, much like the best art pop n roll, lots going on but not cluttered.” (Cath Holland, God is in the TV)
Dadswell’s “abstract blasts and careening melodic lines… gently lift the song to a place of cinematic wholeness.” (Lloyd Bolton, Hard of Hearing)
