Tearjerker have a knack for making songs that feel like the finale of a tv show you love. The members of Tearjerker (Micah Bonte, Trevor Hawkins and Taylor Shute) have been passing bedroom recordings back and forth over email since the band's inception in 2008. As of 2021, not much of that process has changed.
The band embraces abundance when recording. From multi-instrumentalist Taylor Shute's layering of instrumentation, to Trevor Hawkins addition of percussion, samples and found sounds that produce and often unsettling world for listeners to explore. All the while vocalist Micah Bonte explores themes of love, loss and chance paranormal encounters. The result is a quick rip through the band's consciousness, revealing a hazy landscape that's half lush gardens and half on fire. But rather than slipping away into the ether, their music is firmly connected to the reality of everyday life.
From all of this, memorable hooks and melodies will often emerge. As Pitchfork wrote of the band's music: "Hear it once, and feel it become part of your under-the-breath murmuring for the rest of your day."
