Emerging indie sensation Sunken are today releasing their beguiling new single ‘Charm’ via BOXSET. Sunken make beautifully unsettling dream pop that marries the experimentalism of Broadcast with the songcraft of Beach House. Their new single ‘Charm’ is a reflection on the struggles of feeling trapped and the need to confront harsh realities, echoing the band's evolution both musically and thematically.
Speaking on the single, singer and bassist Poppy Billingham says, “The song encapsulates the realities we can face when things don’t go our way. It explores feeling frustrated by how lethargic one feels as a result of hyper-fixating and having obsessive thoughts of someone else. When finding oneself stuck in this mentality, it's often the case that the other person isn’t equally fixated, which in turn can be even more excruciating.”
Produced by Ben Hillier (Blur, Elbow, Nadine Shah, The Horrors) and band member Finn Billingham (who has also recently produced HighSchool and Sam Akpro), ‘Charm’ was written and recorded over an intense two-week period. The accompanying video was directed by guitarist Finn Boxer who sets it in a bathroom with no visible exits, showing each of the band trapped within it and navigating the claustrophobia. Sunken’s debut EP, Hometime, delved into the dark corners of a break-up and its aftermath, showing deft musicianship and introducing Poppy’s enticing vocals. Follow-up single, ‘Show Me Your Mind’, pushed things further. Also produced by Ben Hillier, the track added an exciting, woozy colour to the EP’s palette and has since garnered over 3 million streams on Spotify, and also was featured on the final series of M. Night Shamalyan’s Apple+ thriller, Servant. Sunken are now ready for the next chapter. Maturing as a collective, they’re surpassing their early promise: energised and rich in influences, be it Beach House, Broadcast, Sonic Youth, or Young Marble Giants. As with before, their new music is both atmospheric and brilliantly orchestrated while it’s left for Poppy to carry the weight; part-heartbreak, part-dreamlike, her voice gives their songs a real humanity. Throughout May, Sunken will be going on tour with HighSchool. Full tour dates below.
