Stephen Durkan is a spoken word artist from Glasgow who delivers gritty poetic monologues that dive deep into our collective unconscious and sets them to a soundscape of dystopian death disco. He writes candidly on subjects such as consumerism, mental health and alcohol abuse with an artistic eye that tries to get to the heart of these issues. The music is not an incidental backing track, it melds with the words to create a unique sonic experience that elevates the subject matter. His influences cross artistic borders, they range from philosophers such as Mark Fisher, to writers and comedians, and musicians from across the board – Black Midi, Neu, Death Grips, you name it. This project breaks down genre barriers and strives to break new ground.
As a result of the response to the debut EP, a collaboration with producer Niko O’Brien (Pecq), Durkan formed the Acid Commune band to bring this music to a live audience. The band brought Durkan’s existential rollercoasters to life with a genre-bending live show that leads the audience through the whole spectrum of emotions. This has led to some incredible gigs, including opening the Big Top Stage at End of the Road Festival.
In late 2023, Durkan recorded an EP with the band in order to capture the visceral energy of live shows. The latest single “I Drink Therefore I Am” is a showcase of the band’s raw power. The new EP is due out in April with another collaboration with Niko O’Brien poised for a release later in the year.
