Deliciously Theatrical” Far Out
“Enthralling…exudes ambition and creativity” Still Listening
“power pop balladry at its most sensual and soulful…SoftTop have truly exposed my soft, gooey centre” Wax Music
Returning for their second single of 2024, Brighton orchestral/indie-balladeers SoftTop share the heartfelt ‘Broken Glass’ - out now (30th September) via Crafting Room Recordings (ELLiS·D, Ideal Living).
Following the maximalist anthemia of February single ‘Runaway’ - ‘Broken Glass’ pares back the textures, while laying it on no less thick with their heart-broken lyricism, soulful vocal acrobatics and grandiloquent string arrangements.
Mingling the tender sensuousness of a Matt Maltese ballad with the fluorescent tinges of Grizzly Bear’s grandiose art-pop, the track mediates on all things love, and bittersweet acceptance as lead vocalist/keyboardist Miles Goodall says: “Broken glass was written from the eyes of someone watching the person they love choose someone else. The pain of seeing them together on a night out for the first time, making that choice, and then having to live with it is marred with a sour acceptance that it might be for the best.”
Creatively spearheaded by keyboardist/vocalist Miles Goodall, and featuring musicians/producers from beloved Brighton acts such as Hutch and Ideal Living in its seven-piece ensemble - SoftTop are dazzlingly ambitious in their scope, in spite of their wry humility in describing their music as “Soft Music For Soft People”.
Forming in March 2023, the band have already sold out local venues Green Door Store and Folklore Rooms and played a pair of headlines at Guildford’s Boiler Room. Winning press support this year from BBC Introducing, Still Listening, Far Out, Wax Music, Noctis Magazine and Post-Brexit Pop, the band also won recognition from the Glastonbury Emerging Talent competition longlist in the spring.
