“baroque post-punk shivers” Louder Than War
Following a 7-date stint of UK shows for Independent Venue Week, Brighton solo artist ELLiS·D (real name Ellis Dickson) shares ghoulish new cut ‘Humdrum’ - due 5th March via Crafting Room Recordings (SoftTop).
A swift follow-up to the psych-glam infusions of last Autumn’s ‘Hullo, Reality’ EP, ‘Humdrum’, by sharp contrast, presents something altogether darker and more elusive. Sounding like The Wytches-meets-Talking-Heads, ‘Humdrum’ jabs out a breakneck, anxiety-ridden rumble of new wave rock that’s propulsive, unrelenting, and insidiously direct. With all parts written and recorded by Dickson himself at Hackney Road Studios with producer Shuta Shinoda (Hot Chip, Jenny Beth), ‘Humdrum’s innate restlessness is rooted in its uneasy conception, as Ellis himself explains:
“I wrote the song in a bit of a frenzy one afternoon whilst I was messing around on a kit with a beat that I’d been stuck on what to do with for ages. I had been trying to visualise melodies that were far too complicated in my head, so I decided to just stick on one chord and let the drums do the work, and from there it just came in a flash. Lyrically, it touches on attempting to stay informed about issues but inevitably ingesting endless streams of sensationalism through the media, and how that punctures through what little tranquillity can be found in everyday life.”
Supporting Razorlight at Brighton Dome and Eventim Apollo last Spring, a prodigious tour schedule in the last 12 months has also seen Ellis - Backed continuously shifting set of Brighton musicians - perform with The Goa Express and Flip Top Head, tour the UK and Europe with The DSM IV (feat. Guy McKnight of 80’s Matchbox B-Line Disaster), sell out The Hope and Ruin in Brighton, and just last month cover the length and breadth of the country for a 7-date Independent Venue Week tour.
With radio premieres of the single already aired on BBC Radio 6 (Tom Robinson) and Radio X (John Kennedy), 'Humdrum' follows up Released 7-track EP ‘Hullo, Reality’ released last October via Crafting Room Recordings, backed by BBC Introducing, Still Listening, Louder Than War, Mix It All Up and Post-Brexit Pop. Shortlisted for last year’s Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition, This latest release comes ahead of festival appearances at The Alternative Escape and Kendal Calling later this year.
