“evoking the confident sparseness of caroline and the decided slowness of Joseph Futak…beguilingly arranged, constantly shifting its emphasis with masterful subtlety.” Hard of Hearing |
Following their addition to this year’s End Of The Road line-up, South London’s Sculpture share debut EP ‘Lichtenberg Figure’. Out now, the EP is released on My Life Is Big (Joseph Futak, Hobby Horse), the label founded by rising indie-folk stars - and new signees to Heavenly Records - Tapir! Mingling the softest reaches of slowcore, folk and jazz into art-pieces of transient, silvery motions, ‘Lichenberg Figure’ warmly hand-holds the listener thru the summery R’n’B pop of ‘Wasting’ and the playful pizzacato jaunts of ‘Thumb Freight’, via the wispy dominions of ‘Here You’, towards the emphatic post-rock freak-outs of closer ‘Sounds Dusty’. Taking it’s name from a form of electrical discharge resembling the patterns of bedding roots or branching trees, the music of ‘Lichtenberg Figure’ captures the same dichotomy as that image - surges of clinical abstraction interwoven with turns of intimate and unadorned naturalism. Prompted by a heap of demos compiled by band songwriter Ted Mair and featuring members of the Golden Dregs and Qlowski - the tracks were produced/mixed by frontman of the former Ben Woods - the group have spent the recent months and years quietly honing their material with a string of successful live performances alongside the likes of Naima Bock, Tapir!, Bingo Fury and Martha Skye Murphy. Sharing single ‘Here You’ last month to support from Hard of Hearing, Post-Brexit Pop, Hash Brand New, Reddog UK and Selout Ldn, to herald the release of the EP, the band play a launch show at The George Tavern on 30th June with support from Maddalena Ghezzi + extra special guest. |
Sculpture began life as a heap of demos created by songwriter Ted Mair, which included a variety of classical instruments rediscovered after years of neglect (clarinet and double bass). Once the band were assembled, these foetal demos were brought to life, now more filled out and muscular. Since 2021, Ted has been joined by fellow The Golden Dregs member Matt Merriman (drums), Qlowski member Lucy Ludlow (cello/bass), contemporary composer James Hurst (clarinet/cello), and writer Aaron Skates (guitar/bass). They are now a collaborative entity.
Their debut EP, Lichtenberg Figure, is released via My Life Is Big.
To create the visual side of the release, the band spent a day assembling various structures of wood, fabric, and found objects. The documentation of this is seen in the video for Here You, as well as being manipulated to create the EP’s cover. Both works were edited by Lucy Ludlow, after the initial day of group work.
