Returning with their first new music in three years, East London’s six-piece Roscoe Roscoe return with long-awaited new single ‘Before You Die’ - out today (15th April).
Blooming with luscious psychedelic splendour, ‘Before You Die’ blends massive instrumental compositions with nuanced acoustic reverberations, landing at a mid-point between 90s genre pioneers My Bloody Valentine & Sigur Ros and the painstaking perfectionism of The Beach Boys ‘Pet Sounds’ . It speaks of a band with an exquisite eye for detail, yet rich with complex and soothing emotional gravitas.
Drawing lyrical inspiration from a 70s Serge Gainsbourg film soundtrack, the release comes ahead of an intimate headline show at The George Tavern later this week (18th), and the prospect of more music to come later this year.
Offering more on the track, Vocalist/guitarist Charlie Read Clarke says: ‘Before You Die’ felt like the right single to put out after some absence of releasing music. We felt sonically, the song had a special kind of energy to it and was a nice place to begin showing people our approach and ideas again. The song title is a reference to a Serge Gainsbourg instrumental, from the movie ‘Cannabis’ which he scored the soundtrack and also stars in. The song is called ‘Avante de Mourir’ which translated to English is ‘Before You Die’. It's a beautiful song and I loved the theme so I wanted to write my own lyrics around this idea. I’ve still never watched the movie.”
Forming at renowned performance-arts college The Brit School, Roscoe Roscoe have a slot at Glastonbury Festival and a headline at the Green Man Rising stage against their name, as well as backing from So Young, NME, BBC Radio 6 Music (5 x plays on Lauren Laverne; Stuart Maconie) and Radio X (John Kennedy).
Boasting a pair of releases on acclaimed tastemaking label Slow Dance Records (Uma, The New Eves), in recent years, their regular live presence in London and beyond has seen them share stages with the likes of The Orielles, Ulrika Spacek side-project Astrel K, Tess Parks, Dummy, Spencer Cullum, White Flowers and Tramhaus. The band also share members and tour Hank, Sarah Meth, and Mandrake Handshake.
