Inspired by a moment of literary discovery, Pit Pony’s single "Well Well" dives into the unique experience of staring death in the face. Motorik anchored instrumentation and razor sharp wordplay meld to form a driving alt rock theme. Building tension one bar at a time, Well Well undulates mid-flight before unleashing soaring vocal and guitar lines for the final contemplation on ‘St. Elmo’s Fire.’
Jackie Purver: “Until I read ‘A God In Ruins’ by Kate Atkinson I just thought that St. Elmo’s Fire was a film or a song. When I read that (brilliant) book I went into a wormhole reading up on it and watching videos of cockpits lit up by blue static bolts of light. The theme of the song is about what perhaps might run through your mind experiencing that and the question of whether you’ll get out of the other side of it. Who you think of, what you think of, would you be stoic or immediately start praying? Obviously people live to tell the tale, it’s there on youtube but let’s hope none of us have to find out first hand. Maybe just read some John Webster if you want to read more about what people contemplate in their final moments.”

Today (16th October 2024) Newcastle’s Pit Pony share their brand new single and video
‘Well Well’ released via Clue Records and EMI North. Inspired by a moment of literary
discovery in Katie Atkinson’s ‘A God In Ruins’, it dives into the unique experience of staring
death in the face. Channelling the rawness of the North East, the track captures their
imprint of punchy, commanding alt rock and takes it to new heights. Listen to the track
here. Watch the video here.
The accompanying video for ‘Well Well’ is a playful portrayal of the monotonous routines
and seemingly never ending to-do list that comes with parenthood, a sense of humour
that vocalist Jackie Purver relates to as a mother juggling her day job alongside being a
musician.
She comments, “As an emerging artist, you don’t have many conversations about
parenthood or often second guess doing so. You're working towards goals like getting a
booking agent, manager or label, who at the end of the day need to put food on their
tables and are inevitably thinking 'how much money can I make out of this band if they
can only go on tour and be away from home for a couple of days tops at a time’. I
remember reading an article by Emmy the Great where she talked openly and proudly
about taking her baby on tour, and it was so refreshing to see her embrace motherhood
without feeling the need to sacrifice her music goals. Sometimes it feels like there’s an
unwritten rule that women in music aren't allowed to get old and have children, and
that's one of the reasons why we wanted to do this video - the more we talk about being
mothers the better, because it is obviously a massive lived experience and should be
normalised”.
Forming in Newcastle in 2017, identity and life experiences have formed the backbone of
Pit Pony’s sound. Over the years they’ve toured extensively with the likes of IDLES, alongside
standout performances at Long Division, Stockton Calling, Waves, The Last Train Home
festivals & more. Continuously, they remain loyal to their roots sonically nodding towards
regional titans Nadine Shah and The Futureheads. With the “ENGLISH ACCENT god damn
it” reminder on PJ Harvey’s ‘Uh Huh Her’ in mind, Jackie Purver stays true to her accent.
Citing the recent influences of Blue Weekend and Skinty Fia alongside the likes of Can
and the soundtracks of Ennio Moriconne, mastering engineer Christian Wright (Wolf
Alice, Fontaines D.C., Pigs x7) proves the perfect fit with Chris McManus (Blank Studios)
heading up recording & production on ‘Well Well’. The track follows 2022’s debut album
‘World To Me’ and this year’s double A- side ‘Accidental Doom / Fuzzy’, marking new
music from Pit Pony set to drop throughout the rest of 2024 and early 2025.
