"Adams delivers a mighty blend of elements that make synth-pop and rave music so divine, all while working within the realm of introspection" - PASTE
“...contemplative reverie on the death of childhood dreams and the rise of new potentialities from their ashes.” - THE FADER.
"a blender of hardcore and electronic bombast" - STEREOGUM
Los Angeles artist Chris Adams who makes music under the moniker PENDANT (all caps) has released his Saddle Creek debut Harp. A lush, surprising new body of work from the producer and songwriter, Harp connects 90s house and rave music with hip-hop, shoegaze, and pop, and which serves as a culmination of years of painful emotional work for Adams brought on by the death of his father over 10 years prior.
The album arrives from a place of spontaneity and necessity with a unifying factor of shared intensity, and lack of compromise that defines both Adams’ sound and his creative ideology — a response to the harsh environments of his youth. “I grew up in a kind of dysfunctional house, and from a young age, I'd experienced these really extreme situations and experiences and feelings, just as a part of my surroundings,” Adams recalls. “My way of coping was to learn how to regulate those things and remove myself. When I was growing up, I looked to music — extreme music, like, punk rock and hardcore — to help raise my senses.” Harp, then, with its heartbeat-raising tempos and viscerally felt textures, serves as a kind of antidote to the dissociative traumas of the world, a paean to extremity, intensity, and the music that allows us to rid ourselves of emotional scars.
