Land of Talk today released Hua Li 化力’s spry new remix of “Your Beautiful Self,” a standout track from their acclaimed 2023 LP Performances (Saddle Creek). Hua Li’s remix transforms the beautiful and sparse original into an ever-building electronic dance track, incorporating pulsating drums and elements of house and disco. “From the moment I heard ‘Your Beautiful Self’ I thought there was a dance track hidden in there,” explains Hua Li 化力. “I took the original keyboard motif and interpreted it on Wurlitzer sent through tape and time warping effects to bring the rock band feeling of the original into the electronic world.”

“I'm obsessed with Hua Li 化力's remix. I have enjoyed many transcendent moments listening, dancing, and blissing out to this track,” says Lizzie Powell of Land of Talk. “Hua Li 化力 did more than remix this song - she elevated, and reimagined it.” The remix is Land of Talk’s first release since Performances, out now across all DSPs HERE. Next week, they will also embark on the second leg of their spring 2024 tour, including shows at Chicago’s Schubas (4/29) and Los Angeles’ Lodge Room (5/12); Hua Li 化力 supports on the initial five dates and a full itinerary is listed below.

Powell has always been a risk-taker. As the creative force behind Land of Talk, over the past 15 years the Montreal-based songwriter has amassed a catalog of four unimpeachable albums that stretch the boundaries of indie rock. But their fifth LP Performances feels like a total reinvention: an unflinching statement from an artist who’s not afraid to say how they feel. Though it trades muscular guitar rock for understated piano, it’s still the most urgent, cathartic, and personal release of Powell’s career so far. “It's the weirdest, mightiest little record I've made since I used to write music on my four-track when I was 14,” they say. “I needed to make a love letter to my teenage self by being more vulnerable and doing all the production myself.” Here, they doggedly value their own intuition over anything else to make their most rewarding album yet.

Montreal-based Hua Li 化力’s project has often worked the fruitful tension between opposing forces, whether being mixed-race, bisexual, or overtly political and softly vulnerable. Now the “half-Chinese, half-militant, half-rapper of your heart” is back with ripe fruit falls but not in your mouth, her most ambitious and personal record to date. Playing between hazy R&B, hip-hop, jazz and electronic, Hua Li 化力’s 2023 sophomore LP takes the imaginary garden as a proxy for cultivating home. An artful collaborator, Hua Li 化力 co-wrote and performed on Gayance's 2023 Polaris short-listed album, Masquerade, and is the touring DJ for Inuk electro-pop throat singer, Riit. Her charismatic stage show has taken her around the world, including tours with Cadence Weapon and Fat Tony (serving as the former’s touring DJ), to Reykjavik’s Secret Solstice Festival, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, and Pride Toronto.
