Oscar Browne, the artist in the midst of a UK folk revival’ - DIY
‘Impressionistic songwriting, there’s a bewitching exactness to what Oscar Browne constructs’ - CLASH
‘Meticulously crafted contemporary folk’ - Line Of Best Fit
London based singer and multi-instrumentalist Oscar Browne has released his debut EP If Only, today, 20 October, via tastemaker label So Young Records. Available as both a standard vinyl version and a Rough Trade limited edition, the latter is limited to 100 copies on aquamarine vinyl and comes with a lyric booklet.
Across the 5 tracks on If Only, Browne channels as much Ben Howard or Kurt Vile as he does Nick Drake and John Martyn. It’s through his ear for musical lucidity that enables Browne to transport his love of traditional folk, into a uniquely contemporary realm. By seamlessly blending folk with elements of indie rock and roots music, If Only is another bold step along the path being forged by young artists reinvigorating folk music in The UK.
In the lead up to the If Only, Oscar Browne has shared 3 singles. ‘Cut Me Off’, Oscar’s second ever single and the first cut from his new EP showed off his knack for infectious melody. Following on with ‘Somebody Else’ and ‘All Or Nothing’, the songs showcase Oscar’s beautifully played guitar, as well as compositional prowess as layers of strings and brass swirl around his earnest, heart on sleeve songwriting. If Only radiates with atmosphere and emotion, the distilling of multigenerational folk influences has found fans, coverage, plays and playlisting with the likes of DIY, The Independent, CLASH, So Young, Domino Records, Rough Trade, BBC 6 Music and many more.
Previously unheard tracks from the EP ‘You and I’ and titular track ‘If Only’ are two more modern folk gems. Offering insight on both, Oscar says: |
