London based singer and multi-instrumentalist Oscar Browne has shared a new track ‘All Or Nothing’. The track is the 3rd cut taken from his highly anticipated upcoming debut EP If Only, releasing 20 October via tastemaker label So Young Records.
‘All Or Nothing’ offers another glimpse into Browne’s alt-folk world, where he masterfully combines classic folk influences with modern, mature songwriting. Browne’s earnest lyrics and rich vocal performance are once again present on this track, as well as on previously released singles ‘Cut Me Off’ and ‘Somebody Else’. ‘All Or Nothing’ is a perfect example of how to build up a track over its duration. The song starts delicate and skippy, with spidery guitars and shuffling drums, culminating in a soaring crescendo of vocals and brass.
Speaking on the track, Browne says:
“‘All Or Nothing’ captures a moment of realisation. Something that once meant everything to you, no longer feels the same which brings freedom instead of grief/loss. It’s an awareness that a new chapter of life is about to start, and a strange feeling of excitement is now overpowering those burdens of the past.”
If Only is released on 20 October, physically as a standard vinyl version and also as a Rough Trade limited edition, on blue vinyl and a lyric book included. Across the 5 tracks on upcoming If Only, Browne channels as much Ben Howard or Kurt Vile as he does Nick Drake and John Martyn. It’s through his ear for musical lucidity that enables Browne to transport his love of traditional folk, into a uniquely contemporary realm. By seamlessly blending folk with elements of indie rock and roots music, If Only promises to be another bold step along the path being forged by young artists reinvigorating folk music in The UK.
Sitting in the eye of the storm of new and experimental UK folk music, Oscar Browne is a founding member of pioneering London collective Broadside Hacks, whose illustrious alumni include Katy J Pearson, Gently Tender and Naima Bock. By exploring the liminal space between traditional, experimental and indie music, artists like Oscar are breathing new life into folk, putting it on the map as one of the most exciting genres coming out of the UK.
Since 2022 debut single ‘Never Quite Right’, Oscar has been busy supporting acts such as Gently Tender and Prima Queen around the UK.
