(29th May) Fresh from an appearance at this year's Dot To Dot Festival opening the SXW Stage ahead of Picture Parlour, Mary in the Junkyard, Hovvdy and Wunderhorse, Bath/Bristol-based dream-pop risers Night Swimming have announced their debut EP 'No Place To Land' - out 27th September. Continuing their swift ascent to becoming one of the UK's most talked about new bands, Night Swimming have also shared the EP's second taster, captivating new single "Let That Be Enough".
Taken under the wing of British producer Peter Miles (FIZZ, Orla Gartland), the band decamped the south west for Middle Farm Studios in Devon in 2023 to record debut EP 'No Place To Land'. Recorded live to tape, industrial rhythms are set against a colourful, atmospheric soundscape, with the band noting the influence of Beach House and Slowdive’s live shows for their "combination of sensory elements" and the resulting "deepening of emotional response".
Exploring themes of perfectionism and obsessive thoughts, new single "Let That Be Enough" swells with a cacophony of reverberating percussion and ominous guitars; rich and striking instrumentation matched to vocalist and lyricist Meg Jones' bewitching musings on self-improvement and preservation.
Speaking more on the inspiration behind new single "Let That Be Enough", Meg Jones said:
"Let That Be Enough is about moving on from past experiences, as well as learning to trust yourself and accepting the choices that you’ve made."
Allowing their collective love of film and scores to motivate them to create music with a cinematic aesthetic, Night Swimming invite the listener to visualise and to indulge their imaginations, with further influences ranging from precursors such as Cocteau Twins, The Cure and Radiohead to more modern contemporary inspiration in the shape of Wolf Alice, Just Mustard and Warpaint.
Lyricist and vocalist, Meg Jones writes in semi-veiled autobiography, drawing on her own experiences, and the experiences of those close to her. In her teens, the lyricism of folk artists such as Joni Mitchell, Laura Marling and Ben Howard resonated with her, for their introspectiveness and sensitivity to detail. More recently, she has found inspiration in writers such as Daughter’s Elena Tonra, Robert Smith, and Lana Del Rey.
Night Swimming have been patient with their music and their craft - taking the necessary steps to hone their sound and live performance - with notable support dates under their belt already with acts including Coach Party, L'Objectif, The Orielles, The Blinders, Sad Night Dynamite, Automotion, Home Counties, amongst others. On upcoming debut EP 'No Place To Land', Night Swimming have delivered a bold, ambitious, spectacular statement of intent and a sure signifier of a band set to soar to the very top.
Night Swimming's debut EP 'No Place To Land' is out 27th September. New single "Let That Be Enough" is out now. Next up Night Swimming play The Victoria in London on 12th July, before celebrating the release of the EP in September with headline dates at Rough Trade Bristol and The Bodega in Nottingham.
