Melotone are an alt-psych band from the Black Country, more interested in texture and ambience than ego. They draw inspiration from '60s psychedelia, namely the Tropicalia movement, with lulling guitar play and hypnotic vocals that float freely into Portuguese. Sometimes drifting into the realms of folk, jazz, and soul, Melotone are a truly global band despite humble beginnings, channelling instrumental pioneers Khruangbin and Kikagaku Moyo with vocals that resemble the arresting style of singers like Jeff Buckley and Brittany Howard, and at times the spirit of Portuguese-English singing Caetano Veloso.
Their debut single Dances On Tableaus received critical acclaim from the likes of METAL Magazine and Fred Perry Subculture whilst also landing them a deal with Think Twice Records. Releasing their sophomore single Entre Ondas in November 2022 under the label, Melotone were praised further across press and radio, including CRACK Magazine and Jamz Supernova who played Entre Ondas on BBC Radio 6 and featured Melotone as a First Look for 2023 Artist on The British Council’s Selector Radio.
As the first of a string of releases in 2023, And... Beyond continues the band’s exploration of Brazilian soundscapes – the native country of singer Alec Madeley – whilst reconciling their humble beginnings in the Black Country, maturing into a sound entirely recognisable as their own.
