Pushing his own distinctive Afroswank genre –a darker, groove-orientated twist on Afrobeats –the 24-year-old Kida Kudz is emerging as a hot tip with praise from A$AP Rocky, Playboi Carti and Olamide. Now signed to Disturbing London, the Essex-based British-Nigerian artist is set to make an even bigger splash with his latest cut ‘Jiggy Bop’.
He moved to Kent with his father, who wanted him to focus on his studies rather than his music career, but Kida instead moved to London and pushed on. He released tracks but never felt as if he discovered his voice. Undeterred, he put recording on hold in favour of writing songs alone in his room. He even restarted his education, studying audio engineering and music business.
After dropping ‘Issa Vibe’, Kida headed to Nigeria where it was already being played on the radio. Back in the UK, it had picked up 600,000 streams at Spotify without any playlist support and the video was highlighted by GRM Daily.
That hard work has seen Kida bubbling on the scene with collaborations including US star Diggy Simmons, Afro-fusion icon Burna Boy and UK talents Geko and Octavian. He recently completed a tour as guest to rising Hackney six-piece NSG and performed at the launch of Axel Arigato’s new Demo Runner sneakers. Over at Instagram, Soulja Boy, Tinie Tempah, Davido and Twin B are just some of the names keeping an eye on his next move.
