Newcastle alt-rockers Jango Flash release their self-titled debut EP, out today (February 9th) via Modern Sky (Crawlers, Malady, Cariss Auburn).
Fronted by enigmatic singer Jack Angus Golightly, Jango Flash started as a means of exerting the fringes of his mind through art and music in a time of darkness and societal disillusionment. As the band grew, their unwavering raw intensity and unabashed vulnerability during live performances have set them apart in their hometown, earning a reputation as one of the most exciting new bands to break from the North East and attracting widespread praise praise from key indie champions (The Independent, The Line Of Best Fit, Dork, Clash and Rough Trade) in the process.
The group have already ticked off a live session on BBC Radio 1, as well as gaining high approval on the BBC 6 Music (Tom Robinson) and Radio X (John Kennedy) airwaves, whilst on the live front they’ve shared stages with acts such as Eades and Lauran Hibberd. Having spent time out on the road late last year supporting Swedish band Hearts (ex Catfish and the Bottlemen), the band’s live activities for 2024 are set to ramp up very soon, with a hometown headline show lined up for February 23rd to celebrate their EP release.
Speaking ahead of their EP release, frontman Golightly explained: “This self-titled EP is our first step into the world of Jango Flash and what we stand for. These four singles tackle topics of love, loss and addiction from an honest place of reflection. We write to lift our spirits to a state of empowerment through catharsis and we want this EP to be the soundtrack to anyone seeking to overcome struggles and find themselves again.”
Detailing the accompanying focus track ‘Perseid 45’, the band added: “Perseid 45 is one of the first songs I ever wrote back in 2018 when I started Jango Flash. The track was meant as an apology song to my previous partner. It references a night where we both sat out on deckchairs in a field up in Scotland and starwatched the Perseid meteor shower. For whatever reason I decided to frankenstein an apology song with a northern wartime story from 1940 where a young boy was accosted by a pack of extraterrestrials in a back lane and experimented on before one of them was killed with a coal shovel. Not really your classic thematic pairing, but I was listening to a lot of Daft Punk and Empire of the Sun at the time, so it was all offset by a really strong disco beat with roaring guitars.”
Jango Flash’s ‘Jango Flash (EP)’ is out now via Modern Sky and available on all digital platforms.
