Leeds based Honey Guide - AKA Jacob Andrews - releases new single ‘Just My Style’ today via Bam Bam Records, the label and collective established by indie-risers Eades, and announces his debut EP ‘A Tidy Room Is A Tidy Mind’ for December 10th.
Reminiscent in elements of Whitney, Kevin Morby or Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, with a sardonic British twist, ‘Just My Style’ opens a further window into Honey Guide’s sonic world.
Harnessing a similar woozy Americana to early releases ‘I Feel Funny’ and ‘Oh Why?’, ‘Just My Style’ adds a tinge of psychedelia. Guitar grooves, keyboard stabs and triumphant sax lines are the chief ingredients in a heady brew, shifting pace and tone between moody verses and euphoric choruses - before an explosive Pink Floyd-esque wig-out closes the show.
Throughout, Jacob’s vocals oscillate from cool insouciance to warm earnestness. In this it reflects the lyrical themes - mirroring the opposing dynamics in the early phase of a relationship, a desire to play-it-cool, versus surrendering yourself fully to your feelings. As Jacob explains:
"When it came down to writing the lyrics I had just met my partner and we were very much enjoying getting to know each other, and were both a little shocked at how much we had in common, so that inspired me a lot. It’s a sort of love song to her in that sense. A sort of ‘I think you’re cool and I’m really glad I met you’ song. It is also a song about missing a significant other, which is what I tried to portray in the chorus.
The song, like most of my songs, started with the music. I had the chords and the groove downs and always hummed the melody along, but never had any words, other than ‘That’s just my style’. For some reason those four words kept coming out of my mouth when I was recording the demo.“
A spirit of collectiveness is pervading the music in Leeds right now - with various projects trading ideas, members and resources to uplift the entire indie scene. Honey Guide falls squarely into this, working with members of rising band Eades in their Bam Bam Studios before releasing on the associated label. Jacob has also played with Far Caspian, Niall Summerton and Harry Hanson, as well as working on demos with Louis Sadler of Van Houten.
