Growing up together in Devon, and initially forced together by the encouragement of a secondary school music teacher, Glasshouse Red Spider Mite eventually began in 2023, musically reconnecting after the dissolution of various other projects.
Recorded by producer Louis Milburn in the back of an audio equipment shop - ‘Everyone Loves You’ begins with a guitar snaking its way around the chords for well over a minute before finding secure footing, at which point Ethan’s spectral vocals creep in for the first verse, building tension with hushed, brushed drums, until finally the release of a perfect chorus, hooky as it is beautiful.
Coming with a music video directed by Ben Hardy, filmed between the band’s native Devon and their current location in Brighton, ‘Everybody Loves You’ has become the band’s signature, set-closing song, and so it feels the perfect introduction to the ‘What Do You Mean…” EP, which spans from eerie slowcore to blisteringly heavy riffing on ‘Ant Mill’, and from the folky stillness of ‘Time For Change’, to the frenetic angular rock on the final track ‘I’m Batman’.
The thread that ties it all together is tightly crafted songwriting and arrangement, the fact that the band have been playing together in different forms for half their lives is clear from a listen - they have the confidence to leave space when it’s needed, and comfortably locking in to precisely shaped crescendos and syncopated forward drives, sounding like one unified musical voice at all times.
