Multi-instrumentalist quintet Truthpaste debut their first single, ‘See You Around’ via Memorials of Distinction. The track is the first song the band wrote together after meeting in Manchester, and has become representative of their years there - equal parts coming-of-age anthem and a meditation on friendship and love. Lead vocalist and saxophonist, Esmé Herbert ruminates “somehow it represents everything I saw and felt in those Manchester years; a blur of every existential thought and infatuation softened into a nostalgic mantra.” First written on guitarist and vocalist Theo Murchie’s 22nd birthday back in 2022, the track has been building buzz over two years of playing it live.
Truthpaste is a movement of fun. Their sound is a careful blend of sincerity and playfulness, and impossible not to sing along to. Over the past couple of years they have served up their unique brand of folk-infused art pop regularly at iconic Manchester venues like Band on the Wall, YES and The Castle Hotel, and are now making a space for themselves in London, playing sold out headline shows at The Windmill and The George Tavern. ‘See You Around’ emerged from experimentation with a new-to-them style of guitar playing, with Murchie describing the process as “crazy how easy it was to make something quite beautiful with such simple finger shapes. It felt almost like cheating. I didn't realise a simple phrase repeated with small variation and pretty lyrics could be so satisfying. This set the tone (no pun intended) for the Truthpastian song writing modus operandi.” Recorded and mixed in London in December 2024 by Nathan Shawyer, the track is anthemic and spirited, embracing the heavy emotions of missing people, going through change and reflecting on formative years, without ever taking itself too seriously. The result is a sound that feels fresh and unpredictable, but achingly familiar at the same time, seamlessly blending folk melodies with pop sensibilities.
