ABOUT THIS ARTIST

Kwazulu-natal born, multi-disciplinary artist, Desire Marea (born Buyani Duma), released their first solo album, Desire, in January of 2020, on his own imprint Izimakade Records. Now based in Durban, South Africa, Desire is already a well known and beloved founding member of Johannesburg collective, FAKA.

As FAKA, Desire Marea and creative partner Fela Gucci, toured the world extensively, including appearances at the 9th Berlin Biennale; Unsound Festival (PL); Roskilde (DK); Sonar (ES); and Dark Mofo (AU). They made their American debut scoring for the brand Telfar at NYFW, and achieved icon status by partnering with Versace to soundtrack their S/S 2019 menswear show. FAKA were also included in Vogue World 100 and Dazed 100 lists.

Desire, the album, is a skillful stylistic departure from their previous gqom inspired work. It’s an exploration of loss, displacement, and the terrifying manifestations of love in the contemporary world. It realizes the full potential of nearly every electronic sub genre at once, despite his having never previously recorded in any of these genres. In the word’s of Ruth Saxby’s 8.0 Pitchfork review, “their exploration of the divine takes them in a many-splendored multitude of stylistic directions, often within the span of a single track: liturgical drone, galloping club beats, existential noise.” Desire will debut this material in front of live people for the 1st time in 2021, sometime approximately between March – early September.
