London dark-pop artist Circe releases new EP Drawing Wings From The Light today.
Across 7 beguiling tracks Circe crafts dramatic, empowering vignettes which take influence from artists as disparate as Bjork, Nick Cave, Burial, Max Richter, Portishead, Kate Bush, and FKA Twigs, as well as the Euphoria and Stranger Things soundtracks.
A string of these have been released ahead of the EP - beginning with symphonic pop-banger ‘Going Down’ and visceral epic ‘Mess With Your Head’, before the atmospheric three-punch of ‘Undone’, ‘Riot of Sunlight’ and ‘Glow’.
The final focus track landing on release day is ‘My Boy Aphrodite’ which Circe offers some insight on:
“I miss you wearing my dress, you always looked best”
My Boy Aphrodite is a sonic novella about meeting my best friend who changed my life when I was a 14. I found someone else in a nowhere-town (we grew up in a very small minded place) who was also not only obsessed with movies - but determined to live in one. He would wear my dresses and I’d wear his suits, and even though the small town was pretty unwelcoming of our dress-up choices, we genuinely didn’t give a shit because we had each other to pile on the glitter and pretend to be goddesses together (nothing much has changed for me since lol).
And so the song tells the story of that time and how he became ‘My Boy Aphrodite’
It’s also an ode to ‘Venus As A Boy’ - a song and phrase that just blew open our baby teen world. Even though we didn’t have the vocabulary at the time, we were working through the sparkly fields of gender and queer identity questions, and the feelings we had about it all - in the safety net of a magical, surreal Bjork song. “
Circe worked to co-produce with Steven Ansell of Blood Red Shoes and former Years & Years man Emre Turkmen on different EP tracks. Often making the connection between the sonic and visual forms of art and culture - a trait which has seen her track ‘Ten Girls’ appear in Netflix hit Elite - Circe also takes cues from the cinematic sounds of Labrinth’s soundtrack for HBO’s Euphoria, capturing teenage lust and angst at its most extreme.
The released tracks have been building blocks of a well-crafted EP world. This, alongside the undeniable hooks, has already expanded her public profile. Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson of BBC 6 Music, as well as Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1 have offered support on the airwaves, and The FADER, NYLON, DIY, The Line of Best Fit, Clash Magazine, DORK Magazine, Wonderland and more have been enthusiastic champions at press.
Editorial playlists on streaming platforms have followed suit, placing Circe as a compelling name within the ecosystem.
She will perform her most significant headline show to date at London’s iconic Brixton venue The Windmill, on September 21st.
