Chappaqua Wrestling have today shared ’Need You No More’ from their forthcoming debut album, Plus Ultra, following next month on 14th April. Its accompanying video is the third to be taken from their live performance series "On Ice."
As the band have introduced the world to their debut full length offering Plus Ultra with singles such as ‘Full Round Table’, ‘Wayfinding’ and ‘Wide Asleep’, a snapshot of the band’s headspace has come into clearer and clearer focus. They’ve lit a match under corrupt politicians, toasted the power of freewheeling revelry, and lambasted social media’s ability to warp minds. With the arrival of ‘Need You No More’ we see the band striding into a freer and easier mindset, finally able to celebrate an ending and the closing of a chapter. The band explains:
"With ‘Need You No More’ we took a huge glug from the hedonist's bottle, spitting the cork to the gutter. We finished recording our album after a heavy and focussed 12-day session in a Welsh field and needed some release. We wanted a song that is pure energy, pure elation and pure vibe, and we recorded it all live in one room together, lights off, getting rid of the prior considerations. Its message gets close to a love song, but its oxymoron-laced lyrics and rawness gave us the hedonistic release that we needed. Sometimes it’s more difficult to switch off than to stay on, so ecstatically enjoying the present moment when we can is something we should all celebrate."
As the band themselves say, “Talking is our generation’s saviour” and Plus Ultra is an album with much to get off its chest. Beginning with its title, “Ne Plus Ultra” is roughly translated as “Nothing Lies Beyond” - a phrase that used to be marked on old-world maps, often dissuading rookie explorers from bothering to sail out. The band repurpose this notion as a challenge from which to launch the album’s central point of focus: exploration. These are songs that plumb societal lows while also conjuring up a feeling of hope. Theirs is a glass-half-full mentality, understanding that to take on the hardest of challenges often requires the optimism that they can be overcome.
The band’s anthems for togetherness have brought them support from the likes of BBC Radio 1, 6 Music, Radio X (where ‘Wide Asleep’ has just been Track of The Week), Clash, Consequence, DIY, Dork, Gigwise, i Paper, Line of Best Fit, MTV, NME, Rolling Stone, Soccer AM, FIFA 23 and more.
Continuing about the album they say: "Plus Ultra documents the journey through our friendship, from school to where we now find ourselves commenting on what is around us. Roughly translating to 'Nothing Lies Beyond', a Latin naval term adopted by those exploring uncharted waters, we present a collection of our best works to date, each lyrically distinct but venturing into new territories that life presents; mass media, Tory austerity, mental health, homelessness, the deprived NHS and the release that music gives you from it all. Come with us to make sense of what lies beyond in this world through questions, power and statements that we stand by.”
