Today, emerging Bristol-based experimental outfit Broadsheets are releasing their explosive single, ‘Chevron’ , a mesmerising blend of electronic and guitar-driven soundscapes that pushes the boundaries of genre. With ‘Chevron’, Broadsheets explore the intersection between electronic and guitar music, weaving together elements of slowcore, trip-hop, and dub. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Duster and Movietone, as well as Portishead and Massive Attack, the track is built on a churning bassline and a twisted disco beat. The crawling murmurs of the verses explode into cathartic howls before the track dissolves into a ghostly coda awash in waves of distorted keys. Formed in 2022 for a set at the iconic Bristol jam night Improv’s Greatest Hits, Broadsheets has since evolved into a dynamic collective of musicians, including Oliver Kadouchine on guitar/vocals, Llyr Cox on bass/guitar, Aidan Surgey on drums/percussion, Laura Kristapaite on synth/vocals, and Tom Monaghan on guitar/bass. Their ever-malleable sound is a testament to their willingness to experiment and innovate, with members often trading instruments between songs and no clear frontman emerging from the haze. ‘Chevron’ follows previous singles ‘Gung-ho Blue’ and ‘Repainted’, further exploring the band's penchant for striking dynamics and nocturnal ambience. The collective will play The Lanes in Bristol on 5 May and The Shacklewell Arms in London on 30 May. Broadsheets bio: Combining the starkness and emotional intensity of Slowcore bands like Duster and Movietone with the seductive soundscapes and nocturnal moods of vintage Trip-hop acts Portishead and Massive Attack, Broadsheets move beyond nostalgia in evoking the sounds of Bristol's past and bringing them into the information-addled present. Formed in 2022 for a set at iconic Bristol jam night Improv’s Greatest Hits, Broadsheets gradually tightened their focus, transforming amorphous, semi-improvised live sets into tightly written songs that retain the murky atmospherics and patiently unfurling arrangements of their early experiments. Consisting of Oliver Kadouchine on guitar/vocals, Llyr Cox on bass/guitar, Aidan Surgey on Drums/Percussion, Laura Kristapaite on synth/vocals and Tom Monaghan on guitar/bass. Broadsheet's shifting line-up reflects their ever malleable sound, with members trading instruments between songs and no clear frontman emerging from the haze. |
