About single 'Sad Isn't Ugly' From Lead singer Brad Ayres:
This is a song I wrote a long time ago, back in lockdown, when mental health, for a lot of people, was constantly under siege. This song in particular was inspired when someone very close to me was going through a real tough time. The chorus almost came instantly to me and although they had a veil of sadness over them I just wanted this message to get through to them that “ sad isn’t ugly” and it is okay to feel that way sometimes. The verses describe someone who is going through insomnia which, I struggle with myself so found it very easy to paint the picture of the frustration when all you want to do is turn your mind off and get some shut eye. I used the lyrics “milk, no sugar, two stress one dread” as for me it seems to be stress related when I can’t sleep and little dread of knowing you’ll be really tired the following day at work in result of this late night. The idea is some people might have milk and two sugars in their tea or coffee but this person in particular is trying to swallow a mix of these emotions like a beverage before they can get to sleep. It is a lot easier said than done!
The band collaborated with independent recycyling business 'Mull' in order to create a range of sustainable merchandise in the form of combs made entirely out of recycled plastic. This is really in keeping with the message of the closing track and previous single 'Forever Stay'.
The entire second EP is much gritter then their debut. Bollo Bollo have found a more direct, distinct sound that still manages to capture the whimsical, playful nature of their earlier work. Their translation of their music from the record into a live setting is where it really comes alive.
