Bad Progress was started by Zygmunt Day, Joe Hyam and Nathan Kerntiff (Peter Hai) in 2019.
The first two years of Bad Progress have seen the writing, recording and release of two EPs, Moody Bangers and More Bangers, music videos, a filmed live set at Cafe Oto, a collaboration with Beavertown beer soundtracking digital short video content, a feature in Sound on Sound magazine in an article about mixing with pedals, winning a remix competition organised by The Quietus and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, gigging regularly and attracting literally thousands of Spotify plays.
Undeterred by lockdown after lockdown, the band spent 2021 writing and recording their first full-length album, ‘Different Englands’, working with producer Simon Small, aka Tunnel of Reverb (MONO, Apologies, i have none, The Front Bottoms, Lande Hekt, Ithaca). The 10-song album draws heavily on indie, synth, punk and experimental music, distilling the ideas on Bad Progress’ two EPs into a focused, song-driven sound. The record explores themes of media and conspiracy theory, memory and loss, families, romance, money and the retreating future of the millennial generation. The album title, ‘Different Englands’, taken from a lyric in ‘Casino Britain’ is a reference to how, from social media, to politics, to class, it often seems like we are all living in parallel versions of the same country.
The first single taken from 'Different Englands', 'The Real Housewives of Atlantis', was released on July 22nd.
