Indie Folk / Chamber Pop / Singer-Songwriter Black Sea Dahu are Janine Cathrein and a gang of musical cohorts: Vera, Simon, Nick, Ramon, Pascal & Paul. Think: modern-day Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. But instead of dropping copious amounts of LSD and driving around in a VW mini-bus, they congregate in various configurations and trip out on sound: in the studio or on stages scattered about the world.
Their debut album White Creatures, co-produced by Gavin Gardiner The Wooden Sky, received critical acclaim and brought about comparisons to Ben Howard, Jeff Buckley, Bon Iver, Radiohead and Big Thief. On the heels of their debut release, the gang has been selling out venues and touring relentlessly, constantly selling out the venues they play. They’ve also been invited to play at festivals such as the Reeperbahn (2018), The Great Escape (2019), m4music (2019) MaMA (2019) and Eurosonic (2020).
The band released a new EP entitled No Fire in the Sand in September 2019. To date, they've shared bills with the likes of José González, Lucy Rose and Sophie Hunger and Ben Howard.
Recently, they've reissued Kingdom North (Rerelease), a collection of songs recorded when they were still called JOSH.
The newly released single 'Glue' , followed by a live version 'Glue - Live at Royal', is the introduction for the upcoming album 'I Am My Mother'.
