Inspired by Karen Dalton's 1971 adaptation of old American folk song 'Old Man Sitting at a Mill' Brighton's Anona - AKA Ella Oona Russell of The New Eves - shares enchanting new single 'Same Old Lady' via Strong Island Recordings - out now.
Pulling apart the raw components of Karen Dalton's Same Old Man', and making them over into a soul-sweeping fantasia of freaky, orchestral-folk eminence, 'Same Old Lady' is as other-worldly and magical as it is strikingly intimate; a sensual feast of flutes, saxophones, cellos and pianos is brought back to heart and home by Russell's direct, timeless vocal performance.
Recorded in a spontaneous burst with Wax Machine's Lau Ro earlier tthis year, Russell seeks to bring new life to characters embedded in American Folklore as she explains:
“Same Old Lady was originally put together as part of the live set for my EP release show in March 2023. Karen Dalton’s version is a favourite; the first time I heard it, it felt like the song just walked right past me. In a strange synaesthetic way. Since I had a full band rehearsing already for the show, I wanted to see where we could take it and that feeling. It turned into a celebration of these people that live and die within the song."
2023 has been something of a breakthrough year for multi-instrumentalist/painter Ella Oona Russell. Having been delayed for three years due to the pandemic, Anona released
their "spellbinding" self-titled debut EP in January of this year to the plaudits of Shindig!, Moof, Psychedelic Baby and Gonzai. Since then, Russell has found growing success as stand-up drummer/flautist/vocalist for rising punk-folk quartet The New Eves. Touring extensively in 2023, the band released their debut single 'Original Sin / Mother' this summer via Slow Dance Recordings.
