London newcomers Y sign to Hideous Mink Records (Alien Chicks, Opus Kink) & SO Recordings (Enter Shikari, Deadletter, Big Special), and announce debut EP ‘Y’ (pre-order vinyl here), set for release April 4th. The official video (watch here) for title-track ‘Why’ is out today (February 6th).
Emerging from the creative crucible of the capital, and comprising of members from or involved with Fat White Family, Meatraffle and Pregoblin, Y is a genre-defying band founded by Adam Brennan and Sophie Coppin during a period of isolation. The duo discovered an uncanny synergy in their music-making, blending shared tastes with contrasting stylistic approaches. This paradox birthed the eclectic, unpredictable sound that defines Y - playfully described as “wonk rock,” “Gameboy thrash,” and even “Egyptian wedding music.”
Newly-signed to Hideous Mink Records & So Recordings, Y celebrated their debut single release at their home stage of The Windmill, Brixton last month, before a February tour support run with Fat Dog, and an April 24th headliner at London’s iconic 100 Club; their exhilarating live show promising to solidify their reputation as one of the most captivating new acts in the scene.
Speaking ahead of their video release, the band revealed: “It explores heroism and fear in the face of the question. A computerised dream world with a nagging sense of reality. We wanted to create a video where it feels like the curtain will be dropped at any moment; With dodgy green screen layers that barely hold on. The band take on roles of cartoon-like characters that pass through a void, take on mutant forms and spar with the chaos around them.”
Y’s ‘Why’ is out now via SO Recordings and Hideous Mink Records and available on all digital platforms.
Y is Adam Brennan (vocals, guitar), Sophie Coppin (vocals, synth), Dan GB (bass), Fells (drums), Harry Mchale (sax)
