“Like a fever dream scored by a jazz band having an existential crisis” Dork Magazine
London newcomers Y release debut EP ‘Y’, out today (April 4th) via Hideous Mink Records (Alien Chicks, Opus Kink) & SO Recordings (Enter Shikari, Deadletter, Big Special).
Emerging from the creative crucible of the capital, and comprising of members from or involved with Fat White Family, Meatraffle and Pregoblin, Y is a genre-defying band founded by Adam Brennan and Sophie Coppin during a period of isolation. The duo discovered an uncanny synergy in their music-making, blending shared tastes with contrasting stylistic approaches. This paradox birthed the eclectic, unpredictable sound that defines Y - playfully described as “wonk rock,” “Gameboy thrash,” and even “Egyptian wedding music.”
Signed to Hideous Mink Records & So Recordings, Y have already attracted substantial praise throughout the press community from So Young, DIY, Dork, The Line Of Best Fit and Rough Trade, as well as spins across the airwaves on BBC 6 Music (Steve Lamacq, Amy Lamé, Emily Pilbeam) and Radio X (John Kennedy). Ticking off recent supports with the likes of Fat Dog, KEG and Warmduscher, Y will celebrate their EP release with a London headliner at the iconic 100 Club on April 24th, followed by a series of festival appearances across the summer months including The Great Escape, Brighten The Corners and Manchester Psych Festival.
Detailing their EP release, the collective added: “This EP is the result of a lot of hard work but working hard on something you love barely feels like work at all. Our band formed out of friendship and passion to do something a little bit different musically. These 4 songs were chosen from our live set, that we had been crafting and perfecting by gigging as regularly as we could around London for a year or so before we recorded anything. Each song is pretty different and shows a different side to our sound. This EP was created to be enjoyed and uplift you. We hope it does and you buy the vinyl because not only does it sound good it looks great too!”
Y’s ‘Why’ (EP) is out now via SO Recordings and Hideous Mink Records and available on all digital platforms.
Y is Adam Brennan (vocals, guitar), Sophie Coppin (vocals, synth), Dan GB (bass), Fells (drums), Harry Mchale (sax)
