wormboys release new single ‘Weird’
Release date: Sunday 1st May 2022
‘Weird’ is the latest track from Leeds based noise-pop group wormboys.
The song follows the band’s 2019 debut EP ‘Eartime’. After a pandemic induced hiatus the band have taken time to refine their sound: returning with the enchantingly gloomy ‘Weird’.
The single is a trudging, rhythmic, fuzzy wall of sound that swells into a raucous crescendo, complete with the subtle plink of a sinister toy piano. Fraught guitar riffs cut through the fuzz and build an abrasive tension, emphasising the emotionally raw lyrics. Guitarist and singer Sop explains, “it’s a song about feeling weird - and that discomfort is meant to be felt by the listener.”
“We’re definitely becoming a noisier band as time passes, I think this single reflects the start of that shift - there’s a touch more chaos”.
The song is accompanied by wormboys’ debut music video, created by combining live footage with historic documentary clips from the British Council film archive. The video reflects the dark yet increasingly confused feel of the song, whilst also serving as an absurdist comment on environmental collapse. Bass player Ruth explains, “it’s our take on humanity’s exploitative attitude towards life on this planet, and the destructive impact of capitalism”.
wormboys are a creepy, queer, moody four-piece from Leeds. The band formed when Sop and Harry met whilst studying Physics at the University of Leeds, and bonded over their shared love of “fuzzy weird sad-girl music” (such as Pixies and Sleater-Kinney).
The group have since become stalwarts of the vibrant Leeds DIY music community, rounding out the line-up with scene veterans Jake (Milk Crimes, Heat Wrays) and Ruth (Not Right, Dispute Settlement Mechanism). They have supported the likes of Martha, SASAMI, and Flasher.
