Wolfgang Tillmans (born 1968, Remscheid, Germany) is an artist living and working in Berlin and London. Since the early 1990s he has created work that offers a new kind of subjectivity in photography, pairing intimacy and playfulness with social critique and the persistent questioning of existing values and hierarchies. Through his seamless integration of genres, subjects, techniques, and exhibition strategies, he has expanded conventional ways of approaching the medium and his practice, increasingly working with sound and moving images. Under his own label, Fragile, Tillmans has been releasing music since 2016 and debuted as set designer for the English National Opera in 2018. The artist has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Turner Prize and the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography. He has had prominent solo exhibitions at numerous international institutions since the early 1990s and his work is held in museum collections worldwide. A major retrospective of Tillmans’ work will be held at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 2022.
