The London trio Witching Waves released their first cassette, First Tape, in 2013. Drummer/vocalist Emma Wigham, bassist Ed Shellard, and guitarist/vocalist Mark Jasper (who also helps runs Sound Savers recording studio) concocted a loud, energetic indie rock sound driven by fierce guitars and Wigham's enthusiastic bashing. The group next released a split tape of covers with fellow Londoners As Ondas, then in late 2014 delivered their first album for the Soft Power label. Titled Fear of Falling Down, the record showed a heavy Vaselines influence and was produced by Jasper at Sound Savers. The group spent the next year playing shows and recording, releasing only a split cassette EP with the band Rattle late in 2015. Meanwhile, U.S. label Happy Happy Birthday to Me picked up Witching Waves, and their next album was a co-release between them and Soft Power. Recorded again by Jasper, the tougher-sounding Crystal Cafe was released in early 2016. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi
