Rouen, France-based outfit Unschooling are today sharing their new single ‘Shopping On The Left Bank’ ahead of newly announced UK/EU tour dates, as well as announcing they’ve signed to Bad Vibrations Records.
Their brand of energetic post-punk is one that revels in calculated discord. Chaotic ensembles of complex mathy guitar lines, dissatisfied vocals and twitchy rhythm sections have drawn comparisons to such contemporaries as Omni, Crack Cloud and Women, but all wrapped up in a Contortions-esque No Wave spontaneity.
On the new single, which arrives following their 2021 Random Acts of Total Control EP, frontman/guitarist Vincent Fevrier says, “Shopping On The Left Bank mainly talks about the gentrification of Rouen's left bank - something that’s happening in every other major city - but I tried to make it almost laughable. I find the result both danceable but very chaotic, even
dark. It was recorded on a broken tape recorder using cheap tapes, broken guitars and amplifiers. This one was hard to complete."
Running through Spring and Summer, the shows kick off in France this month before a UK run in May/June, and a heap of festival appearances throughout the year – including the likes of The Great Escape, Green Man, Wide Awake, Le Printemps De Bourges, Levitation France, Dot to Dot, and more.
Composed of former members of fellow Rouennaise group MNNQNS, Unschooling emerged with their self-released nine-song Defensive Designs cassette in 2019 which made a splash in the French indie scene. Last year’s follow-up Random Acts of Total Control EP solidified their reputation further afield and established them as one of the most exciting new acts in the current school of post-punk revivalists.
Whilst touring the UK late last year in support of the EP, Unschooling signed to the new label from London-based promoters Bad Vibrations and ‘Shopping On The Left Bank’ is the first taste of what the band have in store for the near future.
