‘Gold’ is the ferocious new single and accompanying video from South London’s Talk Show and the second track to be revealed from their highly anticipated debut album ‘Effigy’, set for release on 16th February via Missing Piece Records. ‘Gold’ follows the release of ‘Closer’ in September and only serves to build the anticipation around the album, which has been produced by Remi Kabaka Jr. (Gorillaz).
The single sets the scene for the record, with relentless drums and bruising, distorted guitars pumping like adrenaline through your veins as frontman Harrison Swann implores you to “just feel it / just feel it” with escalating fervor. Like much of the album, it’s a song rooted in ambivalence and delivered with a snarl; there’s a sense of menace in Swann’s delivery, an uneasy feeling that things could turn dark at any moment.
Speaking about ‘Gold’, Harrison says: “The first song we wrote for the album was ‘Gold', and was finished in about two days. We had this great momentum from being in the studio recording the last EP and just focused on keeping the energy. We started with an underlying, pulsing bass, and I just started mumbling words and lines over top. “Gold coins at the bottom of my pocket” just kinda fell out. The whole verse then came really quickly and set the path of where we had to go. It’s weird we just knew we had something special straight away. It had a climatic feel, with feelings of frustration and turmoil, mixed with tensions and release. We looked at early The Prodigy and those songs with that type of energy and that helped form the rest of the track".
With "Effigy", Talk Show do more than just push their sound; they completely reinvent it. The record offers up a bold and exhilarating showcase for the band’s dramatic evolution, drawing on everything from The Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy to Nine Inch Nails and The KLF as it taps into a raw, primal sound at the intersection of techno, electronic, industrial, and rock music. The result is an immersive, multi-sensory experience, one that conjures up a dark, sweaty warehouse packed with moving bodies all radiating heat and desire, anxiety and release, ecstasy and desperation.
