About ‘Fever Dream’
‘Fever Dream’ feels as though it’s orchestrated by external forces, a collection of complex moods haunt the instrumentation, akin to walking against heavy wind on sludging coastal sands. David Zbirka’s vocal acts somewhat as a grounding emotional force, time seems to stand still as he brings a subtle melodic energy to his gut-feel lyricism. The track suspends us in a thought-provoking freefall.
Following on from the critical reception of atmospheric singles ‘Lost & Found’ and ‘Pauline’ in 2021, Sunnbrella’s heady dream-gaze has earned regular radioplay and tastemaker approval, while also playing a string of headline spots around London’s lauded indie venues, garnering a dedicated following in their wake.
The quotes
David Zbirka states:
"Fever Dream is about feeling yourself for the first time in a long time. It’s about embracing the night at a club or a party instead of standing in the corner on your phone. It’s about overcoming your fear of the dancefloor and talking to strangers.”
“I thought of it as “dream rave” at the time that I wrote it, as I was listening to a lot of 90’s dance music. Lots and lots of Chemical Brothers, Prodigy and even trancy stuff like Children by Robert Miles – on top of the more obvious influences and inspirations that people might pick up on when listening to the song.”
“I was going out a lot more than usual at the time and learning to have more fun when doing so. I think there’s a melancholy to the song, the idea that this feeling won’t last forever, which often lingers in the back of my mind whenever I’m having a good time. Just because you’re feeling blue doesn’t mean you can’t get down.”
Bio
Sunnbrella began life as little more than the lo-fi bedroom pop project of Prague-born, London-based David Zbirka in 2018. He released his debut single ‘Feelin’ Invisible’ which was produced alongside LA-based musician Eyedress (Lex Records) and then 'Wanted Time', the band's debut EP was released in early 2019. That summer brought about his first festival appearance at Standon Calling, as well as support slots with Sonic Cathedral signees bdrmm, also supporting GHUM, Vacations and Baywaves in that same year. Zbirka then toured Australia and New Zealand drumming for Golf Alpha Bravo, the project of Jagwar Ma's Gabriel Winterfield, supporting Angus Stone's new project Dope Lemon on their sold-out tour. Sunnbrella's recent releases have transported its sound out of the bedroom-pop realm into a punchier, more refined and ethereal sound, working with London producer Patrick James Fitzroy (Pixx, Heavy Heart), the results are clear to been heard on recent single 'Pauline' and new cut ‘Fever Dream’.
