Starting with the romantic strand of the freak-folk movement and twisting it through intricate, androgynous vocals, Sorrel (previously known as ‘Jamie Rees’) spent 2024 forming their sound across the DIY guitar scene of London. Having opened for Saul Adamczewski (FWF) at Dash the Henge, the group have played with Bad Vibes at Moth Club, supported Squirrel Flower and Ailbhe Reddy at the Brudenell Social Club, and at London grassroots venues such as the George Tavern, the Shacklewell Arms and the Sebright.
The band fuses wispy, ambient-jazz inflected saxophone lines with a powerful falsetto vocal range, underpinned by folky fingerpicking, evolving drum lines and Stereolab-adjacent basslines. Fusion groups like the Microphones and Big Thief also inspire, with indie and ballad sensibilities at the forefront. Their first single, 'Sons and Lovers', has featured on DIY Neu, BBC Radio 1 and John Kennedy's Radio X show.
