sneaky jesus were formed in 2019 at a jam session in Zion, a former squat in Wrocław (Poland). There, three of the group’s members: Matylda Gerber (sax), Maciej Forreiter (guitar) and Filip Baczyński (drums) met. At first their musical relationship was loose. They were meeting at various jam sessions with no real intent of forming a group. But as they got to know each other's musical abilities the idea of a band seemed more tempting. Only a bass player was missing who would anchor the whole band. They found this anchor in Beniamin Łasiewicki.
In the spring of 2020 the global pandemic put live music in Poland on hold, so the group focused on mixing the second single Groove From Hell. Also at this time debut LP For Joseph Riddle was composed and arranged and temporary line up changes brought Mariano De Ona Martinez to the band. At first as a substitute bassist and in the end as the affiliate pianist and synth wizard. sneaky jesus were eager to widen their sound pallet so two more affiliate musicians were invited to join the For Joseph Riddle sessions: Wiktor Maternik supplied Donald Byrd-esque, hard bop trumpet and Michał Sczepaniec came in with his tribal inspired percussion rhythms. Also at that time the ban of live performances was temporarily lifted so the group had a chance to play the new material live.
