Previous praise for Slowski:
“There’s this crossover of genres wherein there are aspects which sound so familiar but when everything comes together, it makes for a wholly unique experience.” - The Bops Collective
Bristol-based indie trio Slowski have released ‘Bone Music’, an unapologetic statement piece that speaks for everything the group stand for.
The track takes its name from a Soviet-era method of bootlegging records that was pioneered by innovative sound engineer Ruslan Bogoslowski - whom the band also derive their name from - though its subject matter tackles far more than simply paying homage to the Russian rebel.
Thematically, frontman Elliot Winter took inspiration from an incident he witnessed in the Stockwell area of London where a ‘pound shop Lee Van Cleef’ barked abuse at a same-sex couple in the street as they defiantly continued to remain hand in hand. The song consequently exists to challenge all forms of bigotry, and acts as a celebration of the diversity of love in whatever form it takes.
Having cycled through a few different iterations of the band and moved to different parts of the country since their formation in 2018, the founding duo of Winter and guitarist/producer David Brown have now firmly established a base for themselves in Bristol, and earlier this year recruited the talents of Joey Cooke on drums to complete the lineup.
Taking musical inspiration from varied sources such as Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Parquet Courts, Air and The xx, Slowski worked with Connor Jones of Humm Studios in Bristol to record vocals and drums, with guitars and mixing handled by Alexandre Hurr at The Axe & Trap in Wells.
With two previous singles to their name - 2020’s ‘Tumbleweed’ and 2021’s ‘Making Friends With Winter’ (which was reworked earlier this year) - they announced their return to the stage with a headline performance this summer at Bristol’s The Mount Without in their crypt venue space. This triumphant return still succeeds in maintaining the energy of their live shows before a pandemic-induced hiatus, with their headline show at Sister Midnight in Deptford being a previous indicator of their prowess as a live act.
Also earlier this year, the band shared the ‘glossy demo’ track ‘Tangled In The Tulips’, The demo, which was recorded at Brown’s house with mixing from Alfie Tyson-Brown, details a rough truffle trip in Amsterdam and showcases more of the band’s electronic influences.
Slowski are Elliot Winter (vocals), David Brown (guitars, production) and Joey Cooke (drums).
