Today, Bristol four-piece SCALER (fka SCALPING) have shared a new single titled “New Symbols” which was produced by critically acclaimed electronic musician and DJ, Daniel Avery. The single follows their recent return under their new name, as well as recent Avery produced single "LOAM", which has been on the receiving end of critical acclaim and was recently added to the BBC Radio 6 Music Playlist.
The recent single “LOAM” marked a new chapter for SCALER. Not only did the band change their name, but their collaboration with Daniel Avery has seen them lean further into their club and dance-based influences. They connected with one another following the release of their highly praised 2022 debut album “Void”.
Speaking on the single, SCALER says "With New Symbols we wanted to act quickly on our instincts and create something a bit more rough and ready. We started with a sturdy, winding groove before adding the blasts of alien vocals and industrial noise. The focus was exploring different flavours of distortions across all instruments whilst remaining functional at its core, which we especially enjoyed sculpting in the middle shoegazey section - which is particularly fun live."
"New Symbols" sees the band combine industrial percussion with throbbing bass, glitchy leftfield samples, and colossal synth lines. Speaking on the track Daniel Avery says, "The noisy, younger sibling to Loam. This one was alive from the beginning but when asked to fan the flames I happily obliged."
SCALER have also shared details of a UK headline tour to come in November 2023 with support from experimental hip-hop and electronica collective Nukuluk. Having recently been nominated for Best Live Performer at the AIM Awards 2023, the dates follow an extremely successful run of captivating summer festival appearances including a set at Glastonbury and a packed-out headline slot at ArcTanGent, as well as performances at Boomtown, Secret Garden Party, Visions, Standon Calling, Bluedot Festival, and many more.
SCALER initially formed at the end of 2017 with a desire to pair their hometown's visionary, off-kilter dance music to the more organic instrumentation you might find in noise-rock and metal. They have since won all manner of plaudits at radio, press and through fervent word-of-mouth for both their eclecticism on record and for the pummelling intensity of their live performances. Last year, SCALER released their debut album “Void” via fabric imprint Houndstooth Records to widespread acclaim – including end of year mentions from Bleep, Rough Trade, and more. The record captured the band as heavy metal in 4D; moody, distorted and rhythmic, but full of electronic techniques that give the finer details room to breathe. The record also featured guest appearances from Oakland rapper DÆMON and fast-rising Bristol based rapper Grove, who brought vocals to the band’s music for the first time.
With a new name and single out today, as well as live dates to come and further music in the works, as SCALER say, “This is just the start.”
