city: RotterdamDutch alt-rocker Robin Kester signs to Memphis Industries (The Go! Team, Field Music, POLIÇA) and shares brand new single ‘Departure’, out today (Feb 12th) following its BBC 6 Music premiere (Nemone).
Partnering with esteemed producer Ali Chant (PJ Harvey, Perfume Genius, Yard Act) for her latest effort, ‘Departure’ (featuring backing vocals from Rozi Plain) marks the follow-up to revered 2023 debut album ‘Honeycomb Shades’, which saw the musician lauded for her stirring blend of chamber pop and psychedelia, craftsmanship delicately honed for over a decade.
Fresh from an acclaimed slot at Eurosonic last month, Kester’s new material showcases her unique sound that’s at once minimalist yet gorgeously rich and warm, and inspired by the likes of Talk Talk, Portishead, Air and PJ Harvey herself. Whilst her potent lyricism, honest yet enigmatic in nature, has lead to her citing the likes of Julia Jacklin and Mitski as strong inspiration.
Detailing ‘Departure’, which is set to be followed by further releases and a full live plot, Kester explained: “Most of ‘Departure’ is based on a diary entry dating back to when I was thinking about maybe moving again (because I often moved someplace else during childhood and kept doing so in my adult life, thinking it might help whenever I felt unhappy). But at the same time I knew this literal escapism didn’t really ever solve anything. When I used this diary entry as part of the lyrics, I was afraid they were maybe too on the nose and perhaps I also felt a bit vulnerable because I’m more used to writing in a way that lets me hide things underneath lyrics and melodies.”
Robin Kester’s ‘Departure’ is out now via Memphis Industries and available on all digital platforms.
