“London's finest purveyors of infectious wonky pop-noise. Fact.” Tim Perry, The Windmill
“They are just so so good.” John Kennedy, Radio X
“Pushpin shine at Glastonbury” Far Out Magazine
“Pushpin are marching into the ballpit, declaring playtime against the musty and drab, decorating the universe with bundles of felt tip pens clutched in their palms like daggers.” Hard of Hearing
Ahead of the release of sophomore self-titled EP - due 11th October - and their biggest headline show to date at Moth Club in November, South London Wonky Art-Pop Quartet Pushpin share emphatic new single ‘WAWAWAWAWA’.
Produced by Joe Futak (Tapir!, The Howl and The Hum, Lilo), ‘WAWAWAWAWA’ offers a succinct, two part drama of techni-colour art-pop maximalism; cantering drums, thunderous bass-lines, and cascades of galactic synth expansions reach a heavenly, gut-burst euphoria before before exquisitely stepping aside to make way for, lyrical, etherea, folk-wanderings.
Playful at its core - giant painted cardboard cut-outs of dogs decorate their stages - both sections are thematically unified in their attempts to find order and intimate connections within life’s chaos, as vocalist/guitarist/violinist Arthur Robijns: “The song’s about all the chaos of life swamping you, ageing you, making you a horrible little gremlin, but then you figure a way through it through your connections with other, wonderful people.”
Releasing their debut EP Picnic in 2022, the band’s growth has been steady and considerable. Winning airplay from Steve Lamacq (BBC Radio 6Music), and considerable backing from John Kennedy on Radio X (‘Hot One’, live session), the band’s live shows have progressed from regular performances at The Brixton Windmill alongside fellow mainstays Mary In The Junkyard and Fat Dog (the band have played there 32 times in total), to nationwide tour dates, sell-outs at The Shacklewell Arms and The Lexington, with their biggest London headline to date at Hackney’s Moth Club pencilled for this coming November. On the festival front, the band were finalists of Green Man Rising in 2022, performed at the Main Stage at Truck Festival the following year, notably performing 4 sets at this year’s Glastonbury back in June.
New EP Pushpin offers the band’s more ambitious collection to date. Defined by relentless musical experimentation, the 6-song set finds home for vocal choirs, hurdy gurdies, avant-garde brass freak-outs, 3 part a capella rounds, dance pop synth choruses, and much else besides
